In the event your operating system corrupts and losses functionality to some degree, Windows 10 has the
Advanced Startup Options menu, that contains a range of diagnostic and repair utilities to help restore the OS back to Its functional state. You can perform a System Restore, Reset your PC, execute commands via the Command Prompt and more. To have It readily available, In this tutorial, I will show you
how to create an Advanced Startup shortcut on your PC's desktop.
Essentially, once the shortcut has been applied, you simply double-click It, and your computer
will Immediately reboot Into Advanced Startup, thus It's Important to save any active sessions you may have running at the time.
Once It's booted Into
Advanced Startup, you can then perform a
System Restore, recover Windows by using a System Image, and the list goes on. Here's a visual of what to expect, when using Its Troubleshooting features to do all the above and more.
This Is what will be accessed when double-clicking the
Advanced Startup shortcut, Pretty cool, yes?, I think so too. The process to create the shortcut, Is extremely simple so without further delay, let's rip Into this tutorial.
Step One:
Firstly, navigate to your computer's desktop, right-click on a blank area and select
New >
Shortcut as shown below.
Step Two:
Next, In the
Type the location of the Item field, enter the following command.
%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 00
Then hit
Next to move forward.
Step Three:
Now you need to give your shortcut a name. It can be anything you like. For the purpose of this tutorial, I've named mine
Windows 10 Tips Advanced Startup. When you've applied yours, click
Finish to finalize the process.
Step Four:
I've navigated to my computer's desktop and as you can see, the
Advanced Startup shortcut has been successfully created. As already mentioned, the moment you double-click It, your PC will
Immediately reboot Into Advanced Startup, thus It's Important to save your active tasks. Let's double-click It to make sure It's functional.
Step Five:
As expected, my computer Is
restarting and will boot Into Advanced Startup. When the shortcut Is double-clicked, there's no warning whatsoever- all sessions will be Instantly terminated.
Step Six:
After a minute or so, my system has
booted Into Advanced Startup, whereby I can use a number of tools and utilities to diagnose and/or repair my PC. I've decided to checkout the
Troubleshoot option.
Last Step:
If my computer has lost stability and/or functionality, I now have an array of options to help get It back to Its optimal state. In fact, performing a
System Restore Is the first thing you should try, prior to opting for anything else.
Final Thoughts:
Although you can access
Advanced Startup via the
Recovery section In
Windows Settings, nothing beats the simplicity of a double-click of the mouse. Moreover, the shortcut Is not dedicated to the computer on which It's created on. You can copy & paste It to any compatible device, hence have It readily available at all times.
