Every time you execute a particular application, the operating system automatically uses a default app to launch It. The same applies to all files. If you're not happy with a particular default app, you can right-click the file, select 'Open with' and choose the program that will execute your application. However, by default, the 'Open with' option for .bat files Is not available In the right-click context menu, hence In this tutorial, I will show you how to add It with Incredible ease.
Before I make a start, here's what I'm referring to. I've right-clicked my Batch file named Windows 10 Tips.bat, and the 'Open with' feature Is not available as shown below.
Unlike many other files, whereby you can choose an app to open them by right-clicking, selecting Properties and then Open with, you cannot do this with Batch files. As such, I will demonstrate how to add 'Open with' to the right-click context menu for all .bat files.
To do this, I will use a neat little Registry file, that will automatically add the entries to the Windows Registry, and add 'Open with' to the right-click menu thereafter. I have provided the download links to the Registry file, at the end of this article. So without further delay, let's get this tutorial started.
Step One:
Once you've downloaded the file, extract Its contents to a folder of your choice and double-click the Add Open With.reg file. It will prompt whether to add the entries to the Windows Registry, so hit Yes.Step Two:
A message will be returned, confirming that the entries have been successfully added to the Windows Registry, so click OK to finalize the process. Open with has now been added to the right-click context menu, for all Batch files. We'll check It out In the next step.Step Three:
I've now right-clicked my Batch file named Windows 10 Tips.bat and as you can see, 'Open with' Is readily available. Let's make sure It's functional, by clicking It.Step Four:
As expected, I can now select an app to open my Batch File from the available options, or navigate to a directory by choosing Look for another app on this PC.Last Step:
In the event you've changed your mind and want to remove 'Open with' from the right-click menu, simply double-click the Remove Open With.reg file and hit Yes.Final Thoughts:
In terms of Batch files, unless you navigate to Control Panel and select Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program to choose an app that you wish to open It, there's no other simple method to perform this action. Well, not until now! And that's what makes this tweak so effective.Use any of the links below to download the aforementioned Registry files.
