The Taskbar that's located at the bottom of your computer screen, allows you to perform a variety of tasks, such as viewing minimized windows, accessing Task Manager, add or remove Toolbars and a lot more. It also provides the option to place It to the left, right or top of the screen, however If you don't want other users performing such actions, In this tutorial, I will show you how to securely prevent changing the location of the Taskbar.
Before I make a start, here's what I'm referring to. Upon right-clicking on a blank area on the Taskbar and selecting Properties, you will see a drop-down menu next to Taskbar location on screen as shown below. When selected, you have the choice of placing It In other locations on your computer screen.
Whilst this serves It's purpose well If you want to reorganize the Taskbar to your liking, there's nothing stopping other users from doing the same, namely against your wishes. As a result, I will demonstrate how to securely disable the above functionality, by using the good old Group Policy Editor.
Do note, that the GPE Is only available In Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise and Education editions. If you're running either of these, then this tutorial Is for you. The process Is extremely simple, so without further delay, let's get this started.
Step One:The first thing you need to do, Is access the Group Policy Editor. Open the Run menu, enter gpedit.msc and hit OK as shown below.
Step Two:The Group Policy Editor will now open, so navigate to the following directory.
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar
Make sure the Start Menu and Taskbar folder Is selected and on the right pane, double-click Prevent users from moving the taskbar to another screen dock location.
Step Three:Next, to the left of the window, select the Enabled radio button and then hit OK to finalize the process.
Step Four:The option to change the position of the Taskbar, Is now securely disabled. Here's my settings before the above Implementation was applied. I can place It to the left, right or top of the screen via the drop-down menu.
Last Step:And here's the result after applying the setting via the Group Policy Editor. As you can see, the drop-down menu Is grayed out, hence the option to change the location of the Taskbar, Is securely disabled. Perfect!
Final Thoughts:The good thing about working with the Group Policy Editor, Is the fact that the majority of changes, do not require a system reboot- which can be somewhat Inconvenient If you have a number of active sessions up and running. Moreover, not too many users are aware that the setting to prevent the Taskbar from being relocated actually exists In the GPE, which Is what makes this so effective.
To reverse the change and have the above Taskbar option functioning as per Its original state, refer to Step Three above by selecting the Not Configured radio button, and then hitting OK.
