How To Manage User Accounts Via Task Manager

When the Windows Task Manager comes to mind, for the most part, we see It as a tool to view running processes, memory consumption, CPU usage, hard disk read & write operations and the list goes on. Whilst this Is absolutely spot-on, did you know that you can also manage the behavior and resources of local user accounts to some degree? In this tutorial, I will show you exactly how to do this with Incredible ease.

The Windows Task Manager, Is a very powerful built-In tool native to the Windows platform, that allows you to see precisely what's happening In your current user session and If need be, take action accordingly. What's unbeknownst to many people, Is that you can do the very same with other user accounts on your PC- without the need to log off or switch users.

For Instance, you can see (and manage) their active processes, sign off the account(s) and even send a message- all performed without leaving your user session. To do all this, you must be logged In as an administrator. Sounds pretty cool, yes? I think so too. So without further delay, let's rip Into this tutorial.

Accessing Task Manager:

The easiest way to directly execute the Windows Task Manager, Is to hit the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys simultaneously on your keyboard. By default, It will open In the Processes tab.

Managing User Accounts:

On the grounds that you have multiple local user accounts on your PC, select the Users tab In Task Manager, and their status will be displayed. In my case, I have 3 user accounts, with Hacking Predator being my administrator account.

Let's see what processes are running In my Windows 10 Tips standard user account, by right-clicking It and selecting Expand.

I have full control on every process, hence If (for example) It's consuming a lot of memory, I can end the task with a click of the mouse.

I can also set the CPU process priority for running applications. For example, I've right-clicked cmd.exe and selected Set priority. I can change It to any level as per the Image below.

Instantly Switch User Accounts:

If your other user accounts do not have a password set, you can Instantly switch and login, by right-clicking the account and hitting Connect. In my case, I will connect to my Windows 10 Tips account.

As you can see, I've logged Into the desktop environment- all with a simple click of the mouse.

Sign Off A User Account:

It's just as easy to log off other user accounts, by right-clicking It and selecting Sign off.

Now simply hit the Sign out user button as arrowed below. Do note, that this will terminate all active user sessions running on the account.

Send a Message To A User Account:

And now for my favorite part. Did you know that you can send a message to another user account? You do now! Start off by right-clicking the account, and hit Send Message.

I will now send a message to my Windows 10 Tips account, by entering It In the Message field and clicking OK.

Upon logging Into the account, as you can see, my message Is sitting on the desktop.

Final Thoughts:

There's a lot more that can be achieved with local user accounts via Task Manager, but It's way beyond the scope of this article to document the lot. For demonstration purposes, everything you've read In this tutorial was performed on my Windows 10 Enterprise edition, on a standard local user account, and without a password being set. Depending on your environment, It may slightly differ to some degree.
