Block Any Program From Accessing The Internet

The moment you connect to the Internet, Incoming and outgoing traffic Is transmitted to and from your computer, some Intentional by the user, whilst others are performed by programs and applications that're running In the background. You cannot control the way each and every program accesses the net, but you can restrict the connection of a given application In It's entirety. In this tutorial, I will show you how to do It In a very effective manner.

There are many reasons why you'd want to block a program from communicating online. Perhaps your child Is using your PC with the Intention to download torrents via uTorrent, or wants to remotely connect with TeamViewer- whatever the case (may be), I will show you how to block any program you like from accessing the Internet In an extremely secure fashion.

To do this, I will utilize the native Windows Firewall, which Is a very powerful tool when used In the right context. Just because It's defaulted to the Windows platform (and not a paid product), do not underestimate It's capabilities! It Is very Impressive Indeed.

This Is quite a lengthy guide, but rest assured, you will have a clear understanding every step of the way. So without further ado, let's rip Into this tutorial.

Step One:
The Windows Firewall must be accessed, so open the Run menu, enter control panel and hit OK.

Step Two:
Next, click on System and Security as Illustrated below.

Step Three:
Now simply click on the Windows Firewall link.

Step Four:
Toward the left of the window, click Advanced settings. This will access the option to configure a rule pertaining to the program you wish to block.

Step Five:
This Is where It all begins. You'd want to block the program's outgoing connection, thus It cannot communicate with the Internet. So right-click Outbound Rules and select New Rule as arrowed.

Step Six:
Select the Program radio button, and then hit Next. 

Step Seven:
You now need to navigate to the directory of the program you want to block. For the purpose of this tutorial, I shall block Internet Explorer from accessing the Internet. I've navigated to It's Installation directory, selected iexplore.exe, and hit the Open button.

Step Eight:
Once you've done the same as above and added the program to block, the result will look like the Image below. Hit Next to continue.

Step Nine:
Obviously you want to block the program, so select the Block the connection radio button. Don't forget to hit Next.

Step Ten:
There's a list of Network Profiles to choose from, so select the one that's set to your environment. Again, hit the Next button.

Step Eleven:
Now you must enter a name for this rule. I strongly suggest entering something completely Irrelevant, yet gives the Impression of a legit Windows service. This way, If anyone views the entry, they'd have no Idea It relates to the program you're blocking. I've named mine Service Host Local Service. Click Finish to finalize the process.

Step Twelve:
And here's the new Outbound Rule as outlined In red. As you're aware, I've blocked Internet Explorer, so let's test It out In the next step.

Step Thirteen:
I've now tried to connect online using Internet Explorer and as you can see, the page can't be displayed Is returned. Perfect! And yes, the URL Is correct at

Step Fourteen:
To reverse the change and allow Internet Explorer online access, I've right-clicked my rule and clicked on Disable Rule. This means that the rule Is no longer active.

Step Fifteen:
I've now tried connecting online via Internet Explorer, and as you can see, the connection Is up and running.

Last Step:
To block It once again, simply right-click the rule and select Enable Rule.

Final Thoughts:
When implementing changes of this nature and you have multiple users accessing your PC, It's of the utmost Importance to anonymize your settings (as per Step Eleven above), by naming your rule to an Irrelevant, yet legit Windows service. You can basically block any program you like, but be sure to always select the file In the default Installation directory.
